What Coaches are Saying

“Gus is a great player and a better person, strong body and takes his development serious. Quick to correct his mistakes and is constantly evolving his game. Great downhill driver and consistent shooter. His big frame gives him the ability to guard multiple positions and that versatility is setting him apart from others his age. His best basketball is ahead of him”

Delton Deal, Head Coach, Southern Assault 3SSB 15U & Nelson University Men’s Basketball

Coaching and training Gus has been really inspiring. Watching a player with so much potential rise to the challenge of success is an interesting view. His work ethic allows him to attack every drill full force and he is able to use skills learned in training and implement them into his game. The future is bright for Gus.
— Coach Darryl McCoy, Destined For Greatness
Gus is not only an extremely talented player with a very bright future but he is also a tremendous leader who leads by example on a daily basis. He is a true joy to coach!
— Eric McDade, Former Head Coach, Midway High School Men’s Basketball
Great athlete to coach... and part of that is because I never really told him how good he actually really is. He’s a leader and he’s smart. He’s patient with his teammates. He’s passionate about whatever it is he’s doing and the thing that I love the most about him is he coaches the people around him.
— Coach Pooh Strickland, Midway ISD

Gus embodies the kind of player every coach wants to have on their team. He is a self starter with incredible determination and work ethic, a natural leader, and an exceptional teammate.

He not only welcomes honest coaching, but constantly takes the initiative to seek further guidance as he relentlessly works to grow himself and his game. When he’s being coached, he always listens intently with direct eye contact, great facial expression, and most importantly does what’s asked of him and more. He’s what I call a “one time guy”, meaning we don’t have to repeat ourselves with him—tell him something one time and he’s taking it and running with it. Even as the youngest player on the team, he has quickly solidified himself as both a vocal leader and through his example. He deeply cares about his teammates and will do whatever he possibly can to help the team achieve success. He is as reliable as they come on and off the floor—exceptional grades (academic all-district and all-state) and behavior at school, first to get there and last to leave, and never takes even the simplest drill with apathy or boredom, viewing all that we do as an opportunity to learn and grow.

His work ethic is unparalleled for an incoming sophomore. He is a guy who goes beyond merely liking or loving the game, but truly lives it. He understands that for him to achieve his goals, he needs to do well beyond what everyone else does, and he does so every day. He is both self aware and seeks help to not just work on what is comfortable for him, but to develop any deficiencies in his game. Gus reflects deeply on where he is at and trying to go, and will always put in the necessary work to do so.

While many might simply see Gus as a great shooter, he has worked tirelessly and consistently to become a phenomenally complete player. Through his hard work in the weight room, he has grown into an elite finisher at the rim, a lock down primary defender, and a great rebounder beyond his size. He has the ability to always make a defense wrong with his deep range from three both off the catch and off the dribble, operate out of the mid post area with his mid range shot, punish smaller defenders in the post, and create separation from the perimeter to finish at the rim. What makes him truly special is his willingness to consistently make the right reads when he inevitably draws two defenders, delivering passes on time and on target to his teammates. With his high IQ, high level ball handling, and inherent selflessness, he’s able to pick apart defenses and make his teammates better on offense.

Gus is an absolute joy to coach, and it’s hard to believe that he has three more years of high school basketball ahead of him to continually grow and develop as a young man and basketball player.
