What Coaches are Saying
“Gus is a great player and a better person, strong body and takes his development serious. Quick to correct his mistakes and is constantly evolving his game. Great downhill driver and consistent shooter. His big frame gives him the ability to guard multiple positions and that versatility is setting him apart from others his age. His best basketball is ahead of him”
Delton Deal, Head Coach, Southern Assault 3SSB 15U & Nelson University Men’s Basketball
“Coaching and training Gus has been really inspiring. Watching a player with so much potential rise to the challenge of success is an interesting view. His work ethic allows him to attack every drill full force and he is able to use skills learned in training and implement them into his game. The future is bright for Gus. ”
“Gus is not only an extremely talented player with a very bright future but he is also a tremendous leader who leads by example on a daily basis. He is a true joy to coach!”
“Great athlete to coach... and part of that is because I never really told him how good he actually really is. He’s a leader and he’s smart. He’s patient with his teammates. He’s passionate about whatever it is he’s doing and the thing that I love the most about him is he coaches the people around him.”
Gus embodies the kind of player every coach wants to have on their team. He is a self starter with incredible determination and work ethic, a natural leader, and an exceptional teammate.
He not only welcomes honest coaching, but constantly takes the initiative to seek further guidance as he relentlessly works to grow himself and his game. When he’s being coached, he always listens intently with direct eye contact, great facial expression, and most importantly does what’s asked of him and more. He’s what I call a “one time guy”, meaning we don’t have to repeat ourselves with him—tell him something one time and he’s taking it and running with it. Even as the youngest player on the team, he has quickly solidified himself as both a vocal leader and through his example. He deeply cares about his teammates and will do whatever he possibly can to help the team achieve success. He is as reliable as they come on and off the floor—exceptional grades (academic all-district and all-state) and behavior at school, first to get there and last to leave, and never takes even the simplest drill with apathy or boredom, viewing all that we do as an opportunity to learn and grow.
His work ethic is unparalleled for an incoming sophomore. He is a guy who goes beyond merely liking or loving the game, but truly lives it. He understands that for him to achieve his goals, he needs to do well beyond what everyone else does, and he does so every day. He is both self aware and seeks help to not just work on what is comfortable for him, but to develop any deficiencies in his game. Gus reflects deeply on where he is at and trying to go, and will always put in the necessary work to do so.
While many might simply see Gus as a great shooter, he has worked tirelessly and consistently to become a phenomenally complete player. Through his hard work in the weight room, he has grown into an elite finisher at the rim, a lock down primary defender, and a great rebounder beyond his size. He has the ability to always make a defense wrong with his deep range from three both off the catch and off the dribble, operate out of the mid post area with his mid range shot, punish smaller defenders in the post, and create separation from the perimeter to finish at the rim. What makes him truly special is his willingness to consistently make the right reads when he inevitably draws two defenders, delivering passes on time and on target to his teammates. With his high IQ, high level ball handling, and inherent selflessness, he’s able to pick apart defenses and make his teammates better on offense.
Gus is an absolute joy to coach, and it’s hard to believe that he has three more years of high school basketball ahead of him to continually grow and develop as a young man and basketball player.

Simply put, he has an elite scoring arsenal. Mills is a true sniper from downtown who leverages his perimeter talent by attacking hard closeouts and utilizing his strong frame to convert through Traffick at the rim. Mills is also sneakily explosive with the ball in his hands.

Gus is a physical, tough combo guard that can put the clamps on his opponent and make their day plenty difficult. He’s skilled at staying in front of his man and seems to enjoy defense as much as the offensive side of the ball. He’s not afraid to bang bodies in order to protect his rim and he’s always in the mix when a rebound is up for grabs. He’s talented on the offensive end of the floor as well, displaying an impressive ability to knock down the three-ball consistently and make plays on the drive with regularity. He’s graceful in the air and he’s an elite finisher at the rim. He’s got solid hang time and the ability to adjust in flight if need be for a better look. Mills is going to garner plenty of attention in high school as long as he keeps putting in the work.

Gus Mills emerged as one of the top prospects and standout players, showcasing a well-rounded game that left a significant impression. His ability to run the floor effectively in transition led to easy layups, while his reliable shooting from beyond the arc and smooth mid-range jumper made him a consistent offensive threat. Mills demonstrated a deep offensive arsenal, including step-backs and one-legged fadeaways, highlighting his versatility. Offensively, Mills excels as a shooter, creating scoring chances through smart movement without the ball, making effective cuts, and finding open spaces. He’s also adept at handling the ball, creating his own shot, and driving to the basket. Defensively, Mills stands out with his intensity, quickness, and versatility in guarding multiple positions. His strong defensive principles, including disrupting passing lanes and forcing turnovers, coupled with his high basketball IQ and relentless motor, make him a valuable contributor on both ends of the floor. His all-around impact and ability to do the little things that help his team win set him apart as a standout player.

Gus Mills was the most reliable go-to option, showing an effective feel for the game, keeping the offense flowing and the defense constantly shifting. He played well both off the ball and in drive-and-kick situations, proving him to be a versatile scorer. His ability to pull-up for mid-range jumpers or stepback for a three-pointer made him incredibly difficult to guard one-on-one. Mills effectively used his size to get to the rim, often taking advantage of mismatches by posting up smaller guards near the basket. His quick first step allowed him to blow by defenders with ease while his athleticism and powerful strength helped him to absorb contact and finish strong in the paint. At 6'2", Mills also showed a dynamic effect on the boards, making an impact beyond just scoring.

He’s a physical guard that can knock down shots, finish around the rim and rebound. He plays with good pace and is active on the defensive end of the floor.

Gus is a patient, versatile guard that can get the spectators out of their seats with his incredible passes. He will out hustle his opponent every single time down the floor and somehow maintains his pace and energy throughout. He's a solid rebounding guard—consistently racking up second and third chance opportunities for his team. He can drive either way and lay it in right or left, so he's hard to stop in the lane. He has active hands on defense every time and that leads to steals with regularity. His patience is impressive and he has the ball handling ability to allow it. It often seems as if he's quickly looking at his options and going with his third or fourth choice. I expect Mills to have a big impression on his squad next season and for the attention on him to get larger and larger.

Gus Mills, a 6'2" Guard from Waco Midway High School stands out with his frame and versatility, allowing him to play and guard multiple positions effectively. He has a strong shooting ability that stretches the floor, combined with high basketball IQ that helps him make smart decisions on both ends of the court. Mills' overall game and leadership qualities suggest he has star potential. His most translatable skills are his versatility, shooting and advanced basketball IQ..
